Smile

    and some other rubbish lol

Simon and I left my house around mid-day and the journey up to London was boring as usual, except for hearing Affirmation almost as soon as we got in the car and listening to someone phone in for tickets to the concert, who I met later as everyone was leaving, I don't think she's a BBSer though, once we got to Hammersmith we drove around that bloody one way system for what seemed like forever looking for somewhere to park.

After we had done that we went to stuff our faces and wander around for a bit. This was fun for Simon as I kept asking what the time was every few minutes, cue lots of sighing and shaking his head before ACTUALLY telling me what it was lol

When we wandered over to the venue Sue was there and it was lovely to meet her after a little while Simon and I were allowed inside the foyer (which I was glad about, cos it was freezing) a bit later Sue came in and I let her take two photos of me and Simon.

The soundcheck was short, but good. Darren told us we were going to be filmed (ooh err) and said that he hoped we were dressed well, cos he certainly wasn't. To which I replied "That's right, you scruffy git" should I be relieved he didn't hear me, do you think? lol I also spoke to Tracey and Leonie for about five seconds each

God, there is SO much to remember about the concert, Specificus weren't as bad as some people claimed they were, but I hated the lighting for them. I like to be able to see who's on stage and I didn't see the need to have it so dark while they were on, Darren did his thing of teasing us by removing his jacket *can't remember which song that was* lol

It was lovely to hear him do the different version of TTMAB he thanked us afterwards for loving that song. Oh, I couldn't see much of the IMY girl and I'm not sure if she's a BBSer. sorry this part of the review is going to be crap, but it's hard to remember everything. Maybe I'll be able to do a better one about it after Wednesday

I did have a double "Phwoarrrr!!" moment a couple of times though when Darren was standing near Lee lol I hope my pics came out ok and if I've got some good ones, I'll find a way of getting them posted as I haven't got a scanner.

I've got one more thing to say if you've read this far and that is the staff at the Hammersmith Apollo were really polite and helpful to me, which I appreciated very much.

*glares at the smiley restriction on the board*

He was very good. I really enjoyed him singing 'Good Enough' which is a surprise seeing as how I hate that track Affiimation was the highlight of the show for me. I thought that the sound was a bit 'off' - the music tended to drown out his voice but that may have been just from where I was sitting/standing. Minus point - 2 squealers right behing me whom I could've cheerfully strangled *grrrrr*

A good night even if my feet were killing me by the end of it.

    *is wearing slippers tonight* lol

All in all a Darren put on a very good show Vocally he was brilliant, however some readjustments on the music front need to be addressed in my opinion. It was a pity that so much reliance was put on using a keyboard syntheseizer which tended to rather cheapen some of the songs

The hightlight of the evening for me was Affirmation, very emotional and a wonderful performance Other songs which worked well were Good Enough, Insatiable, Crush and Spin. However when it came to some of the old SG ballad songs, I felt rather cheated by the brevity and the music lacked organically. There definitely needed to be far more use of acoustic guitars and just some *real* musical instruments.

Please do not think that I am being over critical of Darren's performance in any way. I just feel that he needs to reach his full potential musically. He is just scratching the surface of what he could really become. He has the most wonderful voice, and is extremely talented, but he needs to assess the direction his music if taking him. I hope people here will regard this as a balanced review. I just want the very best for him, because he deserves so much success in the future

    Janie xx
